How to Trade Stock Spreads

The word “spread” in trading can have a couple different meanings. Most commonly refers to the difference in price between the bid and the ask price of a particular instrument. This article will talk about the other way the term “spread” is used. It’s also used as a strategy for trading options.

A regular stock trade is pretty simple process. Let’s say you buy a stock. In order to profit from it the price obviously needs to go up. The opposite is true if you are on the short side of a stock. You are wanting the price to go down. In a spread trading strategy, you area taking a position on both sides at the same time. What you are looking for is a move large enough to exceed the difference between the spread of your long and short position.

When you trade a stock both ways you are not benefitting from a move in either direction. Whatever your winning side is gaining, your losing side is increasing at the same rate. It becomes a total wash (well minus commissions of course). This is where trading the option contracts come into play. Due to options being leveraged, your risk is limited to the full price of one side of the spread trade where as the other side has virtually unlimited risk.

HOW THE OPTION SPREAD WORKS

When you trade the option spread you’re speculating that a stock that has been consolidating in a tight range will break out and make a large move in the coming day(s). You just aren’t sure which way it is going to break out. You then want to purchase an equal amount of both put and call options with the same expiration date that are as close to each other in price as possible. It’s important to be as balanced as possible so that you don’t have a bias to one side or the other that increases risk and reduces reward if the move goes in the opposite direction of your biased position.

An example would be you are watching XYZ which has been consolidating in a tight price range between $20.00 and $22.00 after coming down off of it’s yearly high around $40.00. The next level of support is around $10.00. This shows you that you have plenty of room to run between support and resistance levels regardless of the direction of the breakout in price. You start by purchasing 1 call option contract for $2.50 ($250 cost) and 1 put option at $2.50 ($250 cost). Over the next few sessions the price of the stock breaks down below support and continues to drop down to that $10.00 support range. Depending on how much time is left before expiration, your put contract can be worth around $10.00 ($1000) and your call option contract is $0 but it’s not worthless because it still has time where it could rebound and gain some of it’s value back. So you had a total position of $500 ($250 long and $250 short). Your short position just increased to $1000 in value and your long position dropped to $0 giving a combined gain of $500. At this time, you would sell the put option contract and hold the long option contract to see if you get a bounce in price back to the highs. You may be able to recover a portion of your original call option contract increasing your overall gains on the trade.

Job Satisfaction when Working in an Independent School

Working in independent schools jobs has given me significant job satisfaction in a number of ways. Primarily, the atmosphere was always geared towards competition and achievement, with the expectation that all staff and students work to a high level. This was complemented by an open approach to policy in most of the schools I worked in, where management and staff hierarchies were kept flexible and open to revision. Junior staff were also hired with the expectation that if successful, promotion could be quick and financially rewarding. However, I gained the most satisfaction from seeing how students I taught were able to go on to successful university and professional careers. While there will be a large amount of turnover every year, many still return to the school to seek advice, or contribute donations. In this way, being part of a community as much as a job has made it worthwhile, and I can’t think of any other position that I’d be happier in.

I tried to find a job the old fashioned way but it was just taking too long. I don’t know if it made much of a difference anyway that I was going to places in person. I think most of them would rather I just did it online like the majority of other job seekers. I went home and did an online search for Jobs in Charity and was happy to see several hundred jobs. It would take me months to look at all of those in person, so I just jumped right in to see how quick I could get a job this way. I found one that really interested me from the start. It was for the position of director of income generation and I felt that I would be perfect for that position. It was a full time position in Exeter, and the salary was very nice. I had all the qualifications so I went ahead and applied. It wasn’t long before I was called in for an interview! I guess this new way of looking for a job definitely works better.
